Although young plantain leaves are used as food, as healthy and very nutritious salad, this plant is still much better known for its healing properties. There are twenty types of plantain growing in residential areas, along roadsides, in meadows and pastures, forests and other places. They are everywhere. They are not toxic or harmful.
According to the shape of leaves and inflorescence’s they differ among themselves, and some native species that are widespread and are used as medicine are: female, broad-leaved plantain (plantago major L.), male, narrow-leaved plantain (p. lanceolata l.) and medium plantain (p. media l.).
Plantains bloom from spring to winter. Some of them since the ancient times are used as a medicine. It is used more by people as a natural medicine than in academic medicine, to treat many diseases and as a prophylactic agent (green leaf juice from the leaf as spring vitamin therapy).
Plantain is harvested until the plant blooms and pick up only young, healthy, undamaged leaves, while the root can be removed and used throughout the entire year. It is used fresh and dry leaf, rarely the entire plant and root.
Everyone will immediately, without hesitation, say that for cuts it is the best to snuggle a plantain leaf. It is also effective against inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes, increases the secretion of fluid in the lungs and facilitates expectoration of thick mucus from the dry respiratory, reduces urinary frequency and has a beneficial effect on the digestive system: diarrhea, catarrh, cramps, ulcers in the duodenum and stomach. Use to relieve coughing.
Chemical composition and effect of all three types of plantain are almost the same, so all three can be used separately or combined. Broad-leaved, big or female plantain it is the most commonly used among people. In all plant there is heterozoid aukubozida and enzyme invertase, emulzina, tyrosinase and coagulase. The leaf has about four per cent of tannin, pectin, citric acid, vitamin C, enzyme invertase, emulsion, tyrosinase and coagulase and saponosides phytoncides having antibacterial power. The seed has mucus, fatty oils, proteins, and sugars.
Plantain is successfully used in respiratory diseases, particularly in severe catarrh, coughs, whooping cough, pulmonary asthma and even tuberculosis.
Purifies the blood, lungs and stomach like no other plant, and is good for all the people who are anemic or have bad blood, weak lungs and kidneys, are pale, have a rash, eczema or hoarse coughing, or are very skinny, despite the abundance of food. It helps also the weak children, who in spite of a good diet lag behind in their development.
♦ In the old herbal books you can read that if you eat daily eight grams of plantain seed, it prevents the formation of tartar. Additionally drink plantain tea.
Plantain syrup cleanses the blood of all the “dirt” and harmful substances. Daily take one tablespoon and one teaspoon for children before each meal.
Plantain is good medicine for the treatment of wounds of all kinds – even open (even on foot), scratches, cuts, stitches axis, with the bite of angry dogs, poisonous animals and snakes (in these last only as an emergency if there is not a doctor).
To treat goiter use fresh leaves crushed between your hands and mixed with a little salt and placed around the neck.
To heal blisters put plantain leaf in the shoes.
Leaves help even in the gland malignant diseases. Plantain leaves are warmly recommended with thrombosis.
In phytocosmetics juice of plantain is known as an effective mean for removing acne and pimple pus from the skin. Preparations of plantain are useful for removing interference caused by the digestive system, and for this purpose there is a special fruit candy of plantain, which is available in herbal pharmacies.
A teaspoon full of leaves place in a quart of water, steam and leave it for a while. Tea from the leaves of the plantain should be drunk as much as possible warmer. The best is to drink a cup of tea in the morning and then one to two cups during the day and another at night, before bedtime. This allows the consumer to have a quiet night.
A full teaspoon of the mixture of plantain and thyme in equal parts scald with a quart of water.
The coating of leaves:
Fresh plantain leaves washed, squashed on board kitchen roller (rolling pin) in leafy pulp and put on the affected area.
Pick young leaves of the plantain, wash them well with water. When dry, the leaves grind and squeeze the juice of the leaves. A liter of juice so obtained mix with two pounds of sugar, and cook for 10 minutes. Drink one tablespoon of syrup before each meal. Store it in the refrigerator.
Mix 15 grams of freshly squeezed juice of plantain with 10 grams of oily cream. Add a few drops of rose oil. Coat the skin where the acne.
