As an appliance that has taken pride of place in many kitchens for the last several decades, the microwave has become essential for making quick and easy meals. Yet are you aware of the consequences using a microwave could have? As well as heating up your meals, the magnetic fields created by the waves may have an effect on your food and your health. Here are five illnesses that may be caused by having this useful, yet possibly dangerous household item in our kitchens.
1. Chronic fatigue
Despite sleeping well and not feeling particularly stressed, you’re always feeling tired. What’s causing this? Well, problems with tiredness could actually be due to your microwave. Indeed, the waves from the appliance may be minimizing the number of red blood cells transporting oxygen within your body; a lack of oxygen in your blood can cause chronic fatigue. Though one solution would be to leave the room while the microwave is in operation, it may actually be best to get rid of the appliance altogether!
It’s not only chronic fatigue that exposure to magnetic waves could be causing. If you stand next to your microwave for too long while it’s in operation, your body may be producing less of the “sleep hormone” melatonin. If you don’t have enough of this hormone in your system, you could be suffering from sleeping problems, or even insomnia.
3. Inflammatory diseases
It’s a well-known fact that, in terms of nutritional value, microwaves are bad news for your food. In particular, the magnetic field created by the appliance destroys the antioxidants contained in food. Unfortunately, this can then lead to an increased number of toxins in your body. In the long term, you may be more susceptible to inflammatory diseases as there are not enough antioxidants in your body to keep toxin levels down.
4. Vitamin deficiencies
Unfortunately, vitamins and minerals also fall victim to the microwave’s magnetic field when food is being heated. Even if you eat healthily, preparing meals in a microwave will remove many of the nutrients in the food. This then results in a lack of certain vitamins, which could later have more serious consequences for your health.
All together, vitamin deficiencies, inflammatory diseases, and sleeping disorders won’t be doing you much good. And we’re afraid it only gets worse as heating up the plastic containers can also release carcinogenic substances. These illnesses combined lower your immune system’s defenses and increase the risk of developing cancer in the medium to long term.
Even though microwaves make our lives easier, the effects on your health may not be worth the time saved. We’d recommend other methods for preparing and reheating meals that don’t carry the same potential dangers. You won’t regret it!
